Big Island Hawii
The Big Island of
Hawaii is by far the largest of the Hawaiian islands. Although it only
has less than 15% of the state's population, the Big Island is larger than
all of the other Hawaiian islands combined.
The Big Island has Hawaii's only active volcano. Kiluea has been
erupting off and on frequently for over ten years. Red hot lava often
pours into the ocean, expanding the shoreline and enlarging the Big Island
even more.
The most interesting sightseeing on the Big Island, even when Kiluea is
not erupting, is Volcanos National Park. Here you can see the steaming
caldera of the larger volcano that has not recently erupted and can walk on
black lava from past eruptions.
The Big Island is made up primarily of two huge old volcanic mountains,
called Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Kea is the Hawaiian word for "white"
and this mountain gets its name because, at 13,000 feet elevation, it is
often covered with snow. Yes, some people even go snow-skiing in
Hawaii.

My advice? If you'd like to see and learn about volcanos, spend a
couple days of your vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii, even if you spell it
Hawii. Then enjoy the rest of your Hawaiian vacation on the
more beautiful islands discussed on the other pages of this website:
